As the days grow colder the season brings about many things. It brings about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and eventually Christmas! It brings about falling leaves and pine trees. It brings about big dinners and family time. It also brings about unwanted things such as the cold and Influenza, otherwise known as the Flu.
The Flu is a very serious and contagious disease that affects everyone differently. Influenza can cause anything from a couple of down days to hospitalization to potential death. 80%-90% of deaths caused by Influenza have occurred in people aged 65 or older. So what can we do to prevent the Flu spreading and affecting each of us?
First of all, make sure to always be wise and wash your hands and try to steer clear of others that have symptoms of the Flu or cold. Symptoms include, but are not limited to: runny or congested nose, sneezing, chills, sweating, fatigue, dehydration, and body aches.
Another way to prevent you from catching the Flu is to get your annual Flu shot. The Flu shot causes antibodies to enter and develop in the body to fight of the virus. The Flu changes every year, so it is important to stay on top of your vaccinations. Flu shots can affect people differently, especially when they have a premeditated illness. If this applies to you, please consult your doctor before receiving your Flu shot.
Flu shots are available to everyone. The Affordable Care Act insures that all insurance companies and plans provide Flu shots. Call your insurance company to find out where you can get vaccinated with no out of pocket costs.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and stay healthy!
